Practice Quiz 20 Answers

  1. このにもつを __________ 。

    1. とどきました
This one is wrong. It should be とどけました。 In that case, the sentence means "I delivered this luggage."

    2. このにもつをあずかって。
Right! The translation is: "Please keep this luggage temporarily." The sentence ends in gerund-form, the request form (casual-style).

    3. このにもつをおこう。
Right! The translation is: "Let's put this luggage (someplace)."

    4. このにもつをおろしてください。
Right! The translation is: "Please unload this luggage." Compare the following:

      Xをおりる
get off from X (bus or train)

      Xをおろす
unload X (object) or let X (person) get off

So "Let me get off here" is ここでおろして下さい。

  2. __________ はずですよ。

    1. やくにたつはずですよ。
Right! The translation is: "It is expected to be useful."

    2. 学会に出るはずですよ。
Right! The translation is: "S/he is expected to attend the conference." Remember that this sentence never refers to the speaker!

    3. だいじょうぶ
This one is wrong. It needs な:

      だいじょうぶなはずです。
      It should be ok.

    4. もうたのみました
This one is wrong. はず must be preceded by direct style.

  3. __________ 人ですね。

    1. めずらしい人ですね。
Right! The translation is: "S/he is a rare person, isn't s/he?"

    2. ゆうめい
This one is wrong. ゆうめい is a な-nominal: ゆうめいな人。 The negative form of this word is ゆうめいじゃない.

    3. 元気
This one is wrong. 元気 is a な-nominal: 元気な人。 Remember, though, that to say "a person who was healthy" you must say 元気だった 人。

    4. このはこをくれた人ですね。
Right! The translation is: "It is the person who gave us this box, right?"

  4. __________ つもりですが。

    1. りょこうに出るつもりですが。
Right! The translation is: "I intend to make a trip, but..."

    2. りっぱ
This one is wrong. りっぱ is a na-nominal.

      りっぱなつもりですが
(personal expectation/belief: S/he believes s/he is eminent, but...)

    3. 本だなばにしまったつもりですが。
Right! The translation is: "I thought that I put it on the bookshelf, but..."

  5. __________ 方がいいかもしれない。

    1. そのおかしより、もっとあまいの
This one is wrong. The の in もっとあまいの is a "Nominal の" which means "one." Therefore another の (connective の) should be placed before 方. For example:

      この本の方がおもしろい。 (only connective の necessary)
      赤い車の方が高い。 (only connective の necessary)
      赤いのの方が高い。 (Nominal の and connective の necessary)

It is often the case, however, that this Adj + の (Nominal) + の (connective) + 方 structure is formed simply as Adj + 方. In other words, both instances of の can be deleted. あまいのの方が いい becomes あまい方がいい. Note that you must either delete both の, or keep both の. Deleting just one does not work!

    2. いそいだ方がいいかもしれない。
Right! The translation is: "It may be better if we hurry."

    3. もっと使いやすいの
This one is wrong. The の in もっと使いやすいの is a Nominal の, "one." Thus, you need another の:
      もっと使いやすいのの方がいいかもし れない?

    4. たばこをすわなかった
This one is wrong. A negative sentence before 方 must be imperfective. The correct sentence should be:

      たばこをすわない方がい いかもしれない。
It may be better if you don't smoke.

  6. このつくえをはこぶの __________ 。

    1. このつくえをはこぶのをたのんだ。
Right! The translation is: "I asked to transport this desk." の in this sentence is the Nominal の.

    2. このつくえをはこぶのは、だれ?。
Right! The translation is: "About the person who transports this desk, who is it?" The の in this sentence is the anticipatory の.

    3. このつくえをはこぶのですか。
Right! The translation is: "Is it that you transport this desk?" This の is the extended predicate.

    4. このつくえをはこぶのには、もっと大きな車がいるよ。
Right! The translation is: "For carrying this desk, a bigger car is needed." This の is the Nominal の.

    5. つもりです
This one is wrong. It must be このつくえをはこぶつもりです。 The sentence このつくえをはこぶ modifies つもり. Thus, の cannot intervene.

    6. 前にいすをならべよう
This one is wrong. このつくえをはこぶ modifies 前. Thus, の must be deleted. The correct sentence would be:

      このつくえをはこぶ前 にいすをならべよう。
Let's arrange the chairs before we transport this desk.

A reminder: a Verbal sentence which proceeds 前 must be imperfective, direct! In addition, do you remember how to say "Let's arrange the chairs AFTER we transport the desk?" → このつくえを ならべたあとで、いすをならべちょう。

  7. 2、3 個とどけて __________ 。

    1. 2、3 個とどけてさしあげて。
Right! The translation is: "Please deliver 2 to 3 pieces (to sensei, supervisor, etc.) for me."

    2. はずです
Wrong. はず is a nominal, so its preceding modifier must be direct-form.

      2 、3 個とどけるはずです
It is expected that s/he will deliver 2 to 3 pieces.

      2、3 個とどけたはずです
It is expected that s/he delivered ~.

    3. 2、3 個とどけてもらおう。
Right! The translation is: "Let's have 2 to 3 pieces delivered." もらおう is a direct-style consultative form ~ましょう (Review the formation of the consultative form).

  8. __________ はこですね。

    1. 重いの
Wrong. When a verbal/adjectival sentence occurs as a modifier of a following nominal, connective の should not be used in between.

      重いはこですね
It is a heavy box, right?

    2. 都内で売っているはこですね。
Right! The translation is: "It is the box which is sold within the city, right?"

    3. 何回も使ったはこですね。
Right! The translation is: "It is the box which you used many times, right?"

    4. 色々
      Wrong. Iroiro is a nominal:
      色々な学会 (various academic conferences)

Also, note that no particle is used when IROIRO hooks up with a predicate as a manner pattern:
      色々教えてください
Please teach me in many ways.

    5. やくに立ったはこですね。
Right! The translation is: "It is the box which was useful, right?"

  9. __________ いいよ。

    1. ものすごくいいよ。
Right! The translation is: "It is extremely good!"

    2. 電話一本でいいよ。
Right! The translation is: "Being one phone call, it is ok (One phone call will do)."

    3. 心配しない方
Wrong (refer to Practice Quiz 20 #5). The correct sentence is:

      心配しない方がいいよ
It would be better for you not to be worried.

    4. 連れてきていいよ。
Right! The translation is: "Bringing (someone) here is okay."

  10. __________ つもりでしたけど、、。

    1. 乗りかえが多いつもりでしたけど、、。
Right! The translation is: "I believed that there would be many transfers, but..." In this sentence, つもり indicates personal expectation.

    2. はんたいだ
Wrong. When nominal + copula だ occurs as a modifier of a following nominal (つもり), copula だ must be changed to の (な in the case of な nominal).

      はんたいのつもりでしたけど
I believed that it was the opposite.

    3. 一人でできるつもりでしたけど、、。
Right! The translation is: "I thought (expected) that I could do it by myself, but..."

  11. 車に __________ か。

    1. 乗ろう
Right! The translation is: "Shall we/I get on the car?" (nor-u → nor+oo)

    2. 借りよう
      Wrong. X ni/kara [Y o] kariru (borrow [Y] from X). The correct sentence is:

      車を借りようか
      Shall we/I rent a car? (kari-ru → kari+yoo)

    3. 通おう
Wrong. Change X ni to X de (by means of X) in this sentence.

      車で通おうか。
      Shall we/I commute by car? (kayo(w)-u + kayo(w)+oo)

  12. __________ を手伝ってくれませんか。

    1. を手伝ってくれませんか。
Right! The translation is: "Won't you help me take care of the cat?"

    2. 赤ちゃんをねかす
Wrong. Predicates must be nominalized with a nominalizer の in front of phrase particle such as を.

      赤ちゃんをねかすのを手伝ってくれませんか
Won't you help me put the baby to sleep?

    3. 時こくひょうを調べます
Wrong. Predicates must be nominalized with a nominalizer の in front of phrase particle such as を.

      時こく表を調べるのを手伝ってくれませんか
Won't you help me check the timetable?

  13. かぜをひいてねているはず __________

    1. けどねえ、、。
Wrong. はず is a nominal, so copula だ/です should precede けど.

      かぜをひいてねているはずだけどねえ
S/he is expected to be in bed having caught a cold, but...

    2. じゃないよ。
Wrong. Instead of a regular nominal + da negative pattern, ~はずが/はない is used (JSL part II p.217):

      そんなはずはないよ
There is no expectation like that.

      かぜをひいてねているはずが (は) ないよ
It is not expected (there is no way) for him/her to be in bed having caught a cold.

    3. 子ども?
Wrong. はずです is a nominal + copula sentence. Thus, when it is used as a sentence modifier, ~はずだ → ~はずの~.

      かぜをひいてねているはずの子ども?
Is s/he the child who is expected to be in bed having caught a cold?
